Brazil may be hosting the 2014 World Cup, six years from now, but preparations are already underway. “Folha de Sao Paulo“, a local newspaper published a research conducted by local agency Datafolha Institute. The intention was to find out if citizens believed that the country was ‘ready’ to host the tournament.

The findings showed that 79% of Brazilians approve the implementation of the 2014 World Cup in the country. 5% of respondents were indifferent, 6% were unable or refused to answer, and 10% were against it. The study was conducted between 25 and November 28, among 3486 people across the country. The margin of error is two percentage points more or less.

The approval exceeded 70% in all age groups, education and family income. This percentage was also exceeded in all the regions in the country, both among men and women. Younger citizens, between 16 and 18 years, were the ones who were more enthusastic with 86% approving the country’s readiness to host the tournament. The lowest rate was observed among those who were above 60 years old at 71%.

Residents of the Northeast were also more favourable to the idea of the World Cup in Brazil: 86% agreed against 5% who didn’t. Southerners were the least enthusiastic: 72% approved and 11% disapproved of the tournament.

In the city of Sao Paulo, the state which is a favourite to host the opening ceremony, the approval rate is 72%. Ironically, their rejection rate is also one of the highest: 17%.

should carry outt a similar survey now. We wonder how their people feel about their ‘preparations’ towards hosting the tournament.
