Handle Bizz: USA Defeats North Korea

The USA Futbolitas handled business today in their opening match against Korea DPR with a 2-0 victory in Dresden, Germany.  In the first half both teams took some time to find their rhythm. It wasn’t until the 2nd half Lauren Cheney notched a point for the Americans with a well executed header off of an excellent cross from Captain Abby Wambach in the 54″. Despite a brilliant effort from North Korea, they couldn’t beat Hopo Solo and her back line. Solo recorded seven saves .

The second goal came from a second effort by Rachel Buheler in the 76″.   A third goal scored by Megan Rapinoe was called back suggesting North Korea’s keeper had possession of the ball. I disagree, she hadn’t gained complete control and therefore was fair game. Should have counted. The US recorded 19 shots compared to Korea’s 13.

Pia Sundhage, USA coach, was pleased: “It feels great to have been playing the first 45 minutes, make some changes at halftime and come out even stronger than the first half against a very strong team in North Korea,” U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage said. “I’m very happy with the way we scored the goals but not only that, the way we played, being so sharp defending. It’s a good start to the World Cup.” Check out the highlights!

Sharp defending is going to be the key for the US this tournament. Speaking of sharp defending, how about that Amy LePelbeit?! Amy and I played together at Arizona State University. She was a force back then and  today her defense was phenomenal. I’m not surprised! Keep it up ladies!

Next Match: USA vs. Colombia, Saturday July 2 @ 11:30am EST. Don’t miss it!
