The Spanish National Team Picks Up Their Royal Awards

Nah, don’t scratch your screens… it’s only David Villa sin cera del pelo (without hair wax) at the Royal Order of Sporting Merit Awards in Madrid yesterday! The entire team received their gold medals last night- the highest recognised sporting distinction in the country – following their World Cup triumph last year. Bien hecho, tipos! In addition, Vicente del Bosque was awarded the ‘Grand Cross‘ (or Gran Cruz), which is the equivalent of the British OBE for his achievements. Players who weren’t called up turned up in their sleek suits (gracias, Jesus Navas, gracias) while the rest came in their slacks and polos. Duh!

The awards are usually handed out by the Royal Family at the palace in Madrid. Interestingly, did you know that no one actually lives in the Palaces? They’re only opened when King Juan Carlos invites his homies over (ambassadors, politicians, Blatter and his wannabes) or at an awards ceremony to honour the best in the business – like this one!
