Women’s Ballon d’Or Finalist Abby Wambach Poses As Guard Of Honour & Says Loss To Japan “Humbled” The USA

There’s a lot of things about USA Women’s National Team striker Abby Wambach – especially here- that screams “Ellen DeGeneres!” From their wackiness to similar hairstyles, Abby can easily pass off as Ellen’s footballing twin. Yesterday, Abby spoke up about the Women’s World Cup final to Japan en route to this awesome photo shoot she did in Hollywood, admitting the US Women’s team has come a long way from that loss.

“I believe that having a loss like that can only do really positive things for a team – it humbles you, it centres you, and it allows you to know where you need to get better so you never have to experience or feel that way again,” she said.

The US women’s team also lost a group match to Sweden in the opening stages of the tournament, which they viewed as a ‘wake-up call’. Of course, it’s always important not to overestimate a team’s performance at the World Cup (you know how everyone screams “We’re Champions Bitches!” and ends up covering their face with a hankie… nooooo!)

“I think there are a couple schools of thought when you face a team that has beaten you two times previous. The first thought is, it being so early in the season we want to learn a lot. It’s not that we want to make mistakes, but we want to know where we are vulnerable. And the other school of thought is ‘You know what? We are the United States, and we don’t like losing, not to mention two times in the same calendar year’.”
