If it isn’t Luis Suarez at the top of your footie minds today, who else could it be? Late last night, it was announced that tipo had been rudely slapped with an eight-match ban (time for Christmas Carrolls now, if you get what we mean!) and a £40,000 fine for his part in racially abusing Patrice Evra.
Don’t get us wrong – Patrice is an incredibly nice footballer (a little too nice for his own good, sometimes) but the use of the word ‘negro’ is highly subjective in Spanish-speaking contexts. Perhaps it wasn’t the word in itself that really ticked Evra off, but the manner in which it was said, and in that case, the FA’s actions may be justified. Still, for a case with no other outright witnesses – isn’t it all a little too harsh?
We believe an appeal is on the cards, and Suarez’s punishment may be reduced, but for now, he’d best enjoy the view from the Anfield stands! Dos Bocadillos para ti, Luis?!
