The African Nations Cup kicks off this weekend, which provides a handy opportunity for under performing league players to show what they’re about! Unfortunately, perennial favourites Egypt failed to qualify for this alongside Algeria, Cameroon and Nigeria. Technically, there’s a better chance of seeing Samuel Eto’o at Paris Fashion Week than at the tournament’s opening ceremony tomorrow. Such is the life of playing at Anzhi!

Speaking of Egypt, they made it to the finals of this tournament eight times… so who’s up for taking their place this year? We hear many of you chanting ‘Viva Maroc!‘ but don’t forget there’s still Tunisia and host country Gabon… c’est un jeu ouvert! (it’s an open game).
Interestingly, this edition of the AFC also features 3 sets of brothers – Yaya and Kolo Toure (Ivory Coast), Ghana’s Andre and Jordan Ayew and Bertrand and Alain Traore (Burkino Faso). There will also be 18 referees officiating this edition, including two officials from the last World Cup.
Tomorrow’s curtain opener will feature the host country pitting against Libya. Here’s the official colourful tournament song… let there be colours!
