The Suspension Of USA’s WPS League And What It Means For Women’s Football

PhotobucketQue triste! It isn’t a good week for fans of the US Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) league. The board announced it would be “suspending play” this year due to complex legal issues involving a former club owner. This matters because some of the world’s best female players ply their trade there including Abby Wambach, Marta, Alex Morgan and Hope Solo. With the league’s suspension, where will they go?

Thankfully, besides Dancing with the Stars, the shining, glorious Olympics are still ahead of them, so these futbolitas will be working hard within their national training camps. But it isn’t as easy as that!

Making the decision to suspend the 2012 season was a difficult and painful one, but it is necessary to take the time to address current issues and solidify our business in order to provide appropriate support needed to achieve the League’s long-term goals.” – WPS.

As far as domestic football goes, there’s no guarantee that the WPS will be back on their feet in 2013. A one-year gap can be detrimental to their forms and they cannot depend on national fixtures or friendly matches to keep them going. These girls should start looking at clubs in Sweden, Germany or even France, where the administration and support system has drastically improved. Abby Wambach would probably suit Paris Saint-Germain’s women’s team (above) very well, given the fact that she’s a football superstar in her own right and loves the supporters. All the ball boy wannabes will be creeping up to her at Leonardo’s next speech, asking for an autograph!

The girls could also consider Japan’s Nadeshiko league. Reigning Ballon d’Or winner Homare Sawa plays there – she’d be thrilled to welcome them!
