The 29th edition of the African Nations Cup (CAN) is scheduled to kick off this Saturday, and it’s going to be one massive fiesta! The tournament is pretty much like the World Cup of the African continent with 32 matches, 16 teams and 4 groups. And given the fact that South Africa are hosting it this year, expect crazy fanfare and a kaleidoscope of colours in all the stadiums!
Last year’s spectacle in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon attracted more than 6.6 billion television viewers in total as Zambia’s historic win also captured the imagination of the public.
For a second year in a row, this year’s edition in South Africa will not feature African favourites, Egypt, who also failed to qualify for the last two AFCON tournaments. However, one group to look out for is Group D (literally ‘D Group of Death!‘) with Tunisia, Algeria, Togo and Ivory Coast. How’s that going to pan out, ya’ll?! It’s anybody guess…
