Women’s Football: Paris-Saint Germain On A Roll After Lyon Win, Barcelona Thrash Espanyol 4-0

Compared to their male counterparts, women’s football in Spain has traditionally been a weekend family affair, with grandfathers and relatives coming over the small venues to support. It’s sweet, but at some point, the structure needs to be thoroughly re-examined.

It is pointless for a club to have 162,000 socios (members) when barely half that number know or care about their women’s team. In fact, they should capitalize on crowd advantage by playing a women’s league game two hours before or after a La Liga game (in the Nou Camp), with an intermission for pitch inspections, etc.

Speaking of which, the Catalan derby between Barcelona and Espanyol was played this week, and the Blaugranas defeated their counterparts 4-0! They’re riding high at the top of the table with 51 points, as Bilbao (43) and Valencia (41) follow closely behind.

After beating Lyon last week, the Paris Saint-Germain’s ladies team have been on an inspirational roll. PSG worked hard to earn a 2-0 victory over third-placed Montpellier on Tuesday, although they still remain in second place on the French women’s league.

Juvisy narrowed the gap on Montpellier thanks to a comfortable 6-1 win at mid-table Rodez, with France striker Gaetane Thiney scoring twice.

Lyon vowed to climb back from their defeat to PSG and defeated Arras 11-2, with Switzerland international Lara Dickenmann claiming the goalscoring honours with a hat-trick.
