Reigning European queens Wolfsburg and high-profile Swedish club Tyreso (above) are set to meet in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final later this month in Lisbon on May 22.
Due to take place two days before the men’s equivalent, the final was decided after Wolfsburg defeated Turbine Potsdam 4-2 and Tyreso sailed to a 3-0 win over Birmingham City Ladies last week. It is also the clubs’ first competitive fixture between themselves, and they’ve never met an opponent from each others’ nations before.
Several Tyresö players are set to leave in the summer including Marta, Meghan Kingenberg, Whitney Engen, Christen Press, Caroline Seger and Verónica Boquete. So they will be looking at this Champions League final as a goodbye gift to some of their long-serving players.
In addition, the Swedes will be aiming to break a seven-year German and French domination of Europe’s Premier club competition. It is also the seventh final in a row (and 11th overall) with German representatives, who feature largely in European women’s football.
