Roy Hodgson Tells England’s Players Not To Complain About Being Homesick, Missing Families At World Cup

Roy Hodgson is set to announce the England World Cup that will travel to Brazil with him on May 12 next week, although it remains to be seen if this will be the final or preliminary squad.

Either way, he has issued a stern – and rather hilarious – warning to his players, a few of whom voiced concerns about being homesick for eight weeks (should England make the finals) in Brazil. The message he had for them was to basically just suck it up! It’s Brazil after all, one of the best places in the world to be for summer, so what is with the complaints?

“You’re not going to be with your wife, you’re going to not see your kids. But this is something you sign up for. Once you sign up for that, you shouldn’t then be saying: ‘Oh I’m missing my family; oh I’m bored. Or what can you do to help me?’ – Roy Hodgson

He then went on to compare the situation to the English soldiers serving in Afghanistan, whom he says have no time to sit around and mope about their fate.

“It’s complete nonsense, it’s just one of those silly excuses that people use. You really cannot have that attitude. You’ve got to put your hand up and say ‘I can’t handle it’ . Those soldiers sat in their barracks must have plenty of boredom in their lives.” – Roy Hodgson
