Whilst the World Cup has been going on, Jose Mourinho has been busy adding new players to his already expansive Chelsea squad. You feel that this season the Blues have the most complete squad in the Premier League. Anything bar John Terry lifting that title aloft come May has to be considered a gross failure.
Let’s start with the football transfers. Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona for £27million was an extremely shrewd move. The midfielder spent eight years in North London, with Arsenal, making 212 league appearances and scoring a healthy 35 goals.
Fabregas has delighted in the Premier League before and he will delight us again this time around. With Frank Lampard embarking on what we can only presume is the “American dream” Fabregas is the perfect man to fill the void.
Diego Costa should be the catalyst in a title charge. Goals were sorely missed at the Bridge last season. Strikers Fernando Torres, Samuel Eto’o and Demba Ba managed a paltry 19 goals between them in the league, as the club toiled to just 71 Premier League goals, 30 less than the top two Manchester City and Liverpool.
Costa, by contrast, scored 27 league goals to help Atletico Madrid win their first La Liga since 1995-96. The Spanish footballer will definitely score goals in the Premier League and should finally fill the gap left behind by Didier Drogba. Goals are his forte and goals are what he’ll bring – a 20 goal haul from him will finally give Chelsea the striker they have needed for the past three seasons.
Another player arriving from Atletico is goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who returns after a three season loan. Considering that the club already have Petr Cech, a goalkeeper was hardly a pressing matter, but, when you think that Chelsea arguably have two of the top 10 goalkeepers in the world it is hard not to be impressed. By having the duo compete for the number one jersey surely both their games will be raised.
A couple of decent defenders at Stamford Bridge will make the team complete. Ashley Cole has departed, as has David Luiz, so a left-back and centre-back are required. Atletico’s Felipe Luiz, who is as a target, is a supreme left-back and one who absolutely oozes quality. Meanwhile, a centre-back capable of competing with Terry and Gary Cahill will also make for a welcome addition.
From what we have seen so far, this Chelsea squad is uber-talented. If they hit the ground running, like they so often do, they should win the title. It is a squad that knows how to win and is too good to lose.
