He was left out of the World Cup, and it now appears that Radamel Falcao’s own reputation is being questioned. With El Tigre’s £6m (or is it £9m now with taxes?) loan move to Old Trafford announced a few hours ago, United fans may be worried that his last appearance in the Champions League was four years ago. Who cares?!
“Falcao is Falcao!” as the staunch idealists would proclaim, and besides, United are not contesting the Champions League trophy this season. A worst-case projected scenario given the club’s winless start to the season is a possible exclusion from next year’s tournament, and that’s still worth a smirk from Van Gaal.
Fear not, Falcao is here! According to a report in The Independent, the 28-year-old striker has now cost his last three clubs a combined fee of £96million, but he has failed to make his mark in Europe’s top competition. Ok, we got you there, but sometimes good players just need the right platforms to succeed. At Monaco, he was quite probably doing his third-party owners a favour by acceding to their requests, so there wasn’t really a chance for him to play competitively. And sure, you could argue that the Ligue 1 is growing, but it only serves the purpose of allowing PSG to play regularly (jejeje, just kidding, or not).
Anyway, the Colombian’s arrival at United means that he is most likely to be used on the regular by Van Gaal, given the departure of Javier Hernandez to Real Madrid and Tom Cleverly to Aston Villa on deadline day today. Robin van Persie has also been struggling to find his form since the Netherlands last competitive World Cup game 50 days ago, and while Angel di Maria is trying to find his footing, a fellow Spanish-speaker upfront in the form of Falcao would certainly help. Indeed, cries of “Dime, dime!!” all over the pitch sounds exciting.
