England women’s record goalscorer and the all-round legendary futbolita herself, Kelly Smith, announced that she has retired from international football. It’s a sad day indeed for the women’s game, because Smith literally paved the way for many other female footballers in England.

The 36-year-old Arsenal Ladies striker scored 46 times in 117 games for England and played at two FIFA Women’s World Cups and four European Championships. She also represented hosts Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics in London.

“After a lot of consideration and many conversations, I have made the toughest decision of my career to retire from international football,” said Smith, who will continue playing for Arsenal, in a statement.

“I feel exceptionally proud and honoured to have played for England for 20 wonderful years. I have enjoyed every single minute of representing my country and wearing the England shirt. The memories will stay with me all my life.” – Smith

It’s a little tragic that there aren’t many videos of her goals and skills available, but here’s one that should keep you entertained. Thank you, Kelly for changing and inspiring the women’s game!
