Argentina coming to play in Singapore – Qué guay!

As if the year 2017 couldn’t get any better in football (we have the ICC Champions Trophy too!), I’ve just gotten word from fabulous fellow futbolitas that world number two ranked team, Argentina will be coming to play here against the Singapore National Team on Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at the fabulous Sports Hub.

Naturally, I’m supposed to support the latter, but you know it’s history in the making… we’ve had Brazil play at the opening of the stadium, and now, Messi and Aguero will be basking in their glorious kits here. Kun takes the cake for being interviewed by Futbolita a total of three times. Talk about overkill – we’re one degree away from his ex-suegro, Maradona. Umm, we need an empanada right now.

Anyway, the fixture has been scheduled to mark the Football Association of Singapore’s (FAS) 125-year anniversary, and will see Argentina field a full strength team, set to include their talismanic forward Lionel Messi and star players such as Sergio Agüero, Gonzalo Higuaín and Ángel Di María, in what is being billed the ‘match of the year’.

Organised by FAS and international sport and entertainment promoter UNICESS, the match is part of four-nation tour that will see Argentina play Brazil in Melbourne, Australia on Friday 9th June 2017, with the Socceroos then taking on Brazil in Melbourne on 13 June 2017, the same night as the Singapore fixture.

Speaking about the historic occasion, Manu Sawhney, CEO of the Singapore Sports Hub, said:

“We are delighted to host two-time World Cup and 14-time Copa America champions, Argentina, in a friendly match with Singapore Lions at the National Stadium in June. This is a fantastic addition to the vibrant season of football at the Singapore Sports Hub, and lends to the festivities in celebration of the 125th year of the Football Association of Singapore. As a staunch supporter of local football, we have worked hard with our partners to present the football community in Singapore and the region, an opportunity to watch the beautiful game played by one of the top teams and some of the best players in the world today.”

Aiden Kwangik Moon, CEO & Founder of match promoter UNICESS added:

“We are delighted to co-promote this match between Singapore and Argentina to commemorate the 125thanniversary of FAS. The game will not only appeal to fans in Singapore but will attract football fans from Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and other nearby countries and will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this generation of Argentinian players compete in Singapore. We look forward to welcoming football fans and families alike as they witness these world-class players in action and create some unforgettable memories.”

Tickets to the Singapore-Argentina match will be available for purchase through Sportshubtix on Thursday 20 April from 9am, and through all other channels from 10am. Tickets are priced from S$40 to S$188 each, with children’s and senior citizen’s tickets available at $25 each.
