    Mourinho lauds Newcastle’s fighting spirit

It was an interesting weekend for Man United, after their 1-0 loss to Newcastle at home, a game that has left fans infuriated. The blame on social media was primarily on English defender Chris Smalling, after fans howled over his “shambolic display” against the Magpies in the Premier League.

The Red Devils suffered a second away defeat in a row thanks to a goal in the 65th minute from Matt Ritchie. This extended Mourinho’s miserable run to seven league games without a win. Interestingly, this is what The Special One had to say in the post-game conference to Sky Sports.

“They (Newcastle) fought like animals and I mean that as a compliment. They gave everything they had and the gods of football were with them.

“It wasn’t going to happen for us but also they gave what they have and what they don’t have and that’s a beautiful thing in football. They must have the best feeling of all, sometimes a better feeling than when you play fantastically well and are better than the opponent.” – Mourinho

Chilean Alexis Sanchez came close to scoring with a good run and shot but wasted the best chance of the match in the 56th minute rounding Dubravka after collecting Lukaku’s throughball. However, Lejeune blocked his goalbound effort after he paused in front of an empty net, and this missed chance has become the subject of “epic memes” online.

There were also eyebrows raised over the fitness of Paul Pogba, after he was dropped for the 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town last week. However, he was substituted shortly after Ritchie’s goal, and disappointed fan called it another “anonymous display away from home”.

Man United go into the fifth leg of the FA Cup against Huddersfield again, and will definitely seek three points at home when they face them on the 18th.
