Another weekend, another whirlwind of almost-unbelievable insanity surrounding one of Italy’s most storied clubs. Goals from Super Mario, Kaka and Riccardo Montolivo propelled the Rossoneri to their first win in Serie A action in six matches – a remarkable event, given Milan’s lackluster form as of late. Yet this exciting event is only one of the reasons the Rossoneri made headlines again this weekend.
On Friday, longtime club CEO Adriano Galliani – as iconic a figure for the Milan faithful as Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini – sent shockwaves through Serie A circles when he angrily announced his intent to step down after twenty-eight years at the helm. A day later, it was reported that after meetings with beleaguered club president Silvio Berlusconi, alternative arrangements had been made. Per Signore Berlusconi, Milan will ‘move forward in unity’ with not one, but two CEOs: Galliani will be joined by Silvio’s daughter Barbara, who has big plans to reorganize the Rossoneri’s upper echelons. Whether the resolution of this particular saga will translate into better results remains to be seen, but with the club’s boardroom drama done with, perhaps a tad more attention may be focused towards the pitch. Much work remains to be done if the Rossoneri are to move up the table from eighth into any of the spots reserved for European competition.
