The Street Child World Cup kicks off in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, today and we’re so excited to be a part of it as the girls and boys from 18 nations come together to promote the message: No Child Should Live On The Streets.”

Arsenal and England international Alex Scott met the Team Brazil girls in the favela (shantytown) where they are training at this week. Like many others, she had the impression of Rio as a sprawling beach city, with the Copacabana at one side, but she quickly realized that the city’s poverty was impossible to ignore.

The girls living in the favela are in a vulnerable position, where they often at a risk of dodging bullets while walking on the streets, a place where violence can be prominent.

Italy and Venezuela won two thrilling encounters on Thursday to make it to the quarterfinals FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2014. It is the first time for both teams, who made history for women’s football in their country, and was even more special for Italy, who defeated Ghana on penalties after a 2-2 draw. Congratulations, girls!

Both sides will now face Japan and Spain, two experienced sides who did well in the last installment of the tournament.
