A big congratulations to Helena Costa, who became the first woman to coach professional men’s football in France this week!
Second-division club Clermont announced the appointment of the 36-year-old Portuguese on their website, which they dubbed as a move that would “help Clermont enter into a new era,” and that she would work closely with developing the club’s youth team players.
The 36-year-old Costa, a Portuguese, previously worked with the youth setup at Benfica, and coached the women’s national teams of Qatar and Iran. She has also scouted for Scottish club Celtic.
It is fantastic news for women’s football in general, and the players and professionals within the squad have showed their support for Costa.
“She has already worked alongside men in the professional world (of football) so she knows how it works. No one has any experience of this, sure, but if it’s worked elsewhere, why wouldn’t it work here? Of course it will feel a bit strange at first, but that will only last a few days.” Clermont striker Remy Dugimont.
In Germany, Turbine Potsdam and FFC Frankfurt are both tied at 44 points on the top of the women’s Bundesliga table, although defending champions VfL Wolfsburg are still in with a chance of retaining the title.
Turbine Potsdam are currently in best shape to win the title following a 4-0 victory over Freiburg in the 18th round of matches, taking them level on points at the top with FFC Frankfurt.
