Last summer in Turkey, we had been warned about the passion of Fenerbahce’s female following, but there was no preparing us for this (again!)
After crowd trouble, adult males had been banned from the game against Caykur Rizespor over the weekend. No matter though, after a goaless draw, Fener picked up the trophy trophy three weeks before the end of the season in front of more than 50,000 women and children.
Indeed, we have never seen such awesome rebellion from girls in a stadium all at the same time, from actual ticket-holders to the grandmothers, to sisters, girlfriends, wives and daughters of the banned male supporters. The girls also threw bouquets of flowers to celebrate their win during the game. Uh, sounds like a lot of fun – Don’t forget us next time, Fenerbahche… sa? olun!
Thousands of fans took to the streets to celebrate, waving flags and singing songs while fireworks were seen exploding all over the Bosphorus strait.
After match-fixing allegations that saw them being thrown out of the Champions League, the club forward Dirk Kuyt admitted : “We are experiencing truly special feelings after all the club went through.”
It was the first league title of the 33-year-old Holland striker’s career after spells with Liverpool and Dutch clubs Utrecht and Feyenoord.
Fenerbahce’s own chairman Aziz Yildirim may also return to prison after his appeal against a conviction for match-fixing was rejected earlier this month.
